Im just gonna copy and paste from my review site...
Usually, when it comes down to a person having to choose between 2 similar things, they will choose the one they first came across, or know more. With me, Ive been gaming since I was very young, in the single digits. So of course I played GTA when it came out. Ive played every single GTA there is, and every Saints Row there is (yes, even the mobile one), and the question is, which one is better? I'll let you decide for yourself after you read this review, but I'm telling you know, I enjoy Saints much more than any GTA there is.
Let's start off by stating the basics. Grand Theft Auto has always been about nailing the realism in crime, gangs and violence, obviously. While on the other hand, Saints Row has been quite realistic, but still a bit arcady. So it all depends on you. If you're the perfectionist type, or even not, and need the hunger for realism, you might actually hate Saints Row. But if you're all about having fun, laughing, etc. You're going to fall in love with Saints Row. And the 2nd one. Grand Theft Auto is a great game, dont get me wrong, but when Im playing a game, I dont want it to be anal when it comes to realistic effects. Now I want some level of realism in there, for sure, like if I shoot someone in the head, I expect them to die, and maybe, their head to explode or roll off. GTA IV gave an impressive cinematic single player experience, and great action scenes, but the driving, I mean, I hated it when I 1st started playing, but of course I got used to it, but it was too realistic, driving wasnt as fun as it was back in GTA III. If I want realistic driving, Ill go outside and actually do it. The driving in Saints Row II is a bit more arcady, but its not rediculous like in Outrun for the original Xbox and arcade. You can flip you car, you can pop your tires, you can peel out, and you can powerslide, but its still not one-hundred realistic, which is cool with me.

Story....hot damn, the story to Saints Row is just awesome. After beating the 1st one way back when, I was thirsting for more, I was like 'omfg what happened to my d00d ahhh!' Now when a chaotic non-sense pure violence shoot em up cop killing game can do that, then you know straight up its good. The story focuses on your character, which takes place a few years after the 1st Saints Row. You try to rebuild the Saints after being betrayed by your fellow gang members and friends. You gather info on each of the 3 rival gangs, the Ronin, The Sons of Samedi, and the Brotherhood. Then you go from gang to gang, tearing them apart from destroying their main sources of income, to killing the majority of their members. You can do the gangs in any order you want, too, so thats cool. Most games try to make their main character a complete bad-ass, and most of them just fail harder than Britney Spears. But in Saints, they nail it perfectly. The dialouge, actions and everything about the main character makes him a complete badass, and is just awesome. The cutscenes and even playable segments are just full of action that complete the enjoyment process. Now that I think back to it, I dont think there was ever a dull moment in Saints. Then, after beating the story and gangs, there are tons of activities you do, like potraying a cop on a TV show and mutilating random pedestrians commiting pety crimes, or causing as much property damage as possbile with an alotted time. No matter what you like to do to pass the time, there's an activity in here for you. There are around 2 of each type of activity with 6 levels each, and every halfway mark you unlock something, whether it be fully auto machine pistols or infinite ammo for you shotguns. Whenever you buy a weapon at the store (aptly named friendly fire), it goes to your weapon cache at your crib. Then you can stop buy any time and select which kind of pistol, rocket launcher, machine gun or grenades you want. Also, they upped the number of weapons in this game like crazy! Theres heat seaking RPG's, mini-guns, flamethrowers, satchel charges, and a lot more. I remember going 'holy ****' whenever I found out there was a samurai sword and a chainsaw in this game. Which now brings me to violence. There is a ton of violence in this game, apparantly, but its not really that bad. I mean, you shoot someone and blood comes out, you shoot someone in the head, and lots of blood comes out along with this really gross squish sound, but there aren't any amputations or decapitations at all. Which really doesnt bother me, and I dont even think about it until im killing someone with a sword or chainsaw. But you can overlook that hopefully. The aiming is good, but not as fixed as it is in GTA IV. Its 3rd person, then you can click the right thumbstick in to zoom a bit, and its a bit touchy, but its not that bad.
Now, just playing the game is fun. Like every now and then on GTA, youll get a **** load of ammo, or throw in the infinite ammo cheat, and find a good place to camp, and just kill anything and everything. But that gets out after awhile. I dont know what it is, but when I do that in Saints, its not boring at all, I literally did it for 2 hours, blowing up old bitches and shooting pilots outta helicopters. I dont know what they did, but they did it right. Just wandering around owning bitches is a blast, and should not be overlooked. The phyiscs in this game are great too, like if you throw a 'nade and it blows up a lamppost, and it comes flying towards you and smacks you right in the face, you'll fall faster than patrick swayze when he was re-hearsing for Dirty Dancing. The attention to detail is great, too. When you blow up a cop car, a **** load of debris goes flying in all directions, including doors, glass, hoods, lights, tires, etc. It looks amazing. And thats just to car. The explosions and fire are awesome in this game, looks real, plus just really cool and sharp.

Music is pretty important too in games, right? Well, this is almost the weak point in the game. On the 1st Saints, all the music was great, and of course there were songs I didnt like, but thats how its going to be for everyone, but their selection of rock on Saints 2 was, well crap. They had maybe 3 good rock songs in my opinion, and the rest where the emo-goth type stuff like Panic ! At the Disco and Avenged Sevenfold. They tried to pick popular music instead of just good music. But they had good hip-hop and rap, but at the same time, most of the rap sucked, as usual. Now the game audio, thats crisp and beautiful. Every sound is there and accounted for. When you reload your 16 shelled pimp-cane shotgun, every spent shell comes out, and every one hits the ground and makes a sound. Its beautiful. Shoot some glass, hear it shatter and clank againts the ground. Run a baby over? Hear the thump like nobody's buisness. Its so clear and awesome.
Fun factor. Its ****ing high. There's so much **** you can do, its just fun all around. Plus theres some rediculous things you can do, like snag a septic tank and cover the whole city in crap. Its so fun! Jump on top of a car and car surf, and change it up and do a handstand while they are rolling through traffic at 80 miles an hour. Its not realistic, but who the **** cares? Its fun as hell!
