For some of you (WineO especially) that haven't been addicted to WoW yet, the first big decision is the different WoW cl***es and races. There are only two different factions (Horde or Alliance) and you choose one mainly by what race you want to be. A race can be chosen by three different factors:
1. You want your character to look cool (The difference if you don't want to look like a cow vs. a gnome.) 2. Races have different racial abilities (each race has four bonuses) 3. Races can only be different cl***es (for example: if you want to be a mage, you can't be a night elf)
Racial Abilities: (Alliance) Humans: Ability to have increased stealth detection and they will always have increased spirit (health and mana regeneration is better), a slight bonus to reputation gains, and slightly extra skill with swords and maces.
Dwarves: May take on a stone form, increased extra skill with guns, resistant to frost, and a treasure finding skill to make it easier to find treasure chests.
Night Elves: They may turn invisible as long as they are out of combat and stay in place, increased chance to dogde attacks, the wisp form when they are dead (increased speed while dead - which allows you to return to your body faster), and resistant to nature damage.
Gnomes: Can escape from speed altering effects, increased intelligence (total mana and spell damage are increased), resistant to arcane damage, and they have a bonus to the engineering skill.
Draenei: Jewelcrafting skill is increased, an activitated ability to heal themselves or others over time for a small amount, party members chance to hit with spells is increased, and resistant to shadow damage.
(Horde) Orcs: May enrage (increases damage, but decreases the ability to be healed), resistant to stun effects, damage done by pets is increased, and they have a slightly higher expertise in axes.
Undead: Activated ability to cure charm, fear, and sleep, they may cannibalize to regain health from corpses (might be only human corpses), their underwater breathing time is increased, and they are resistant to shadow damage.
Tauren: Activated ability to war stomp (which stuns the enemy for two seconds), maximum health is increased, herbalism skill is slightly increased, and they are resistant to nature damage.
Trolls: Activated ability to berserk (increases attack speed), their health and mana regeneration is increased, increased damage against beasts, increased expertise with throwing and bow weapons.
Blood Elves: Enchanting skill is increased, they may drain mana from opponents (then regain some back for themselves), they may silence nearby opponents, resistant to magical damage.

As I stated before, certain races can only be certain cl***es. Following this will be two lists that will contain the same information but one might be easier to read then the other.
The cl***es are only if you play the races that follow them: Warrior: Every race but Blood Elf
Paladin: Human, Dwarves, Draenei, and Blood Elf
Rogue: Human, Dwarves, Night Elf, Gnome, Orc, Undead, Troll, Blood Elf
Priest: Human, Dwarves, Night Elf, Draenei, Undead, Troll, Blood Elf
Mage: Human, Gnome, Draenei, Undead, Troll, Blood Elf
Warlock: Human, Gnome, Orc, Undead, Blood Elf
Hunter: Dwarves, Night Elf, Draenei, Orc, Tauren, Troll, Blood Elf
Druid: Night Elf, Tauren
Shaman: Draenei, Orc, Tauren, Troll
These races can only be the cl***es that follow them: (Alliance) Humans: Warrior, Paladin, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock
Dwarf: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest
Night Elf: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Druid
Gnome: Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Warlock
Draenei: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Priest, Shaman, Mage
(Horde) Orc: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock
Undead: Warrior, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock
Tauren: Warrior, Hunter, Shaman, Druid
Troll: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage
Blood Elf: Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock

These are the cl***es different functions in a group. Keep in mind that cl***es with multiple functions (such as a paladin or druid) are never as good as cl***es with only one function (such as a warrior or priest). However, cl***es with one function are not as versatile.
Warriors are the damage sponges. They make sure that they are the only ones taking damage and require a healer to heal them. The enemies should always be attacking them and only them. They are usually referred as the tank.
Paladins, like warriors can be damage sponges but can also be healers like priests. Their functions are determined as how you specialize them (via talent points).
Rogues are purely DPS (damage per second). Their job is to deal out damage as fast as possible without attracting too much attention away from the tank. Most rogues do best if they can behind the enemy.
Priests are the healers of the group. Their job is to keep watch of the other group members health and to constantly keep their health high. However, they don't do much damage themselves, which can lead to frustrations when playing alone.
Mages are DPS but instead of being sneaky, they can deal damage from a distance. Most gamers, like myself, like mages for their ability to portal to cities at higher levels. However, mages are very quickly killed if an enemy goes for them.
Warlocks are support. They have the ability to summon demons to fight with/for them. Each demon has it's different purpose. The warlock itself generally deals damage, but not as much as a mage or rogue. The imp (the first demon - lvl 2) is a magic damage dealer, and in later levels a way to regain mana. The voidwalker (the second demon -lvl 10) is a tank. The succubus (the third demon - lvl 20) is meant mostly for battlegroups/pvp. The felhunter (the fourth demon- lvl 30) is a melee damage dealer. More advanced demons are available after level 40. Warlocks also have the ability to summon their own mounts, which is usually much cheaper then buying them.
Hunters are support. They have the ability to tame a pet which usually does the melee fighting for them while the hunter stays back and uses a distance weapon against the enemy. These pets be many different species and thus can vary in their function.
Druids are everything and anything. They have the ability to change forms into cats, bears, an aquatic form, a travel form among other forms with higher levels. In normal form, they can deal magic damage and heal. Bear form is considered a tank although of course not as strong as a warrior. Cat form is like a rogue but as strong, and aquatic and travel forms are purely for increased travelling speed on land or through water.
Shamans are support. They use their totems to strengthen their parties and they can heal as well as deal magic damage. They also have a very useful ability to ressurect themselves.
Knowing these things can help you enjoy the experience more. I will not divulge all my secrets on the forums and instead you will have to take a lesson with me in order to learn all you can about the best cl***es for the respected races and what will be more frustrating if you are planning on questing alone or raiding in groups.

The problem with hunters is that in the beginning, you are learning how to control your character. When you add a pet into the mix (which you can't do until lvl 10) then you have to concentrate on two characters (yourself and the pet). It is a very powerful cl4ss, especially for pvp (player vs. player). I know I hate fighting hunters in pvp. However, if you want to be a hunter I understand (I too like pets). Just let me know and I will become a druid since I really do love them.

Someone should probably mention that hunters are usually refered to as Huntards because even a retard could play one.
But hey, my first char was a huntard and I enjoyed the hell out of playing her.

I always felt kind of bad about my character, after playing it so much a Human warrior feels as common as can be No offense to my fellow Human warriors.

Some Racial changes will be happening in WoTLK to keep in mind. (Alliance) Humans: Less Passive Spirit(5% instead of original 10% for you number lovers)
New Racial which breaks you from any effect that makes you lose control of your character. This ability shares a Cooldown with the PvP trinket that does the same thing. Meaning you can not benefit from both. Only one or the other.
Perception which used to be a use ability to give high stealth detection is now just a Passive +1 level of stealth detection. Pretty much for stealth purposes a higher level person has a higher level stealth as well as stealth perception. While playing you'll notice if an enemy is significantly lower level than you and stealthed you can see him from further away or see him at all in some cases. This human racial pretty much means if you are level 5 your stealth detection is that of a level 6 or if you're level 80 you're stealth detection is that of a level 81. No more using it to gain the benefit.
Dwarves: Gain Mace Expertise. What is Expertise? Expertise allows your attacks(not spells) have a lesser chance of being Blocked Dodges or Parried. It is seperate from hit in the fact that hit only lowers the chance for your attacks to be missed. Keep in mind that enemies can NOT Block Dodge or Parry if you are standing behind them.
Dwarves Frost Resistance got changed to a 2% chance to be missed by Frost Spells.
Gnomes: Escape Artist's freeing effect can no longer be resisted. Meaning it will work 100% of the time now.
Arcane Resistance changed to 2% chance to be missed by Arcane Spells.
Night Elf:Quickness which used to be a 2% chance to dodge is now a 2% chance to be missed by Melee and Ranged attacks(again not spells). Which is similar.
Nature Resistance is now a 3% chance to be missed by Nature spells.
shadowmeld: Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Any threat is restored versus enemies still in combat upon cancellation of this effect. What this ability means is that you can use it in combat to escape from combat if needed. IF an enemy is still in combat with you for whatever reason whatever threat, aggro, whatever you want to call it, you had when you used the ability will return. Meaning if you used it when you had the enemy attacking you. When you shut it off the enemy will most likely still be attacking you. Keep in mind along with that ability this racial comes with a hidden effect on it. This racial ALSO increases your Passive Stealth Level. This doesn't mean much for most classes, but for Druids and Rogues this is a nice benefit as a Night Elf is harder to see while Stealthed than any other race.
Draenei: Gift of the Naaru which is a heal over time ability has been changed to scale with Attack power or spell power. What this means is that any class can benefit from this ability at maxed level since the base ability is lackluster at max level. So the higher your stats become better this racial becomes better. Also it will not be pushed back by attacks since it has a Cast time.
Shadow Resistance: reduces the chance to be hit by Shadow spells by 2%

(Horde) Orc: Hardiness is no longer a chance to resist Stuns. It is now a 15% reduced duration on stuns.
Troll: Racial Passive “The Voodoo Shuffle”: Reduces the duration of all movement impairing effects by 15%. Trolls be flippin’ out mon! (The exact quote from Blizz)
Berserking also no longer costs anything to activate. Meaning you won't use mana, rage, energy, etc to be able to use it and gain the benefit. Use it when you need it. Not time it based off of Activation costs.
Undead:Shadow Resistance now reduces the chance to be hit by Shadow spells by 1%
Will of the Forsaken now removes fear, sleep or charm only. It no longer grants immunity to those effects for a short duration.
Tauren: Endurance now scales off of base Health rather than a static 5% Health increase. Blizzard has stated it would be about a 5% increase while wearing green quality gear. Meaning it will be higher if naked and less in better gear. Thus this ability stays the same no matter what kind of gear you're wearing. It will always give the same health regardless of gear, but will improve as you gain levels.
Nature Resistance now reduces the chance to be hit by Nature spells by 2%
Blood Elf: Mana Tap has been removed and rolled together into Arcane Torrent. What this means is you no longer need to Mana Tap to gain the mana, energy, rage, etc back from Arcane Torrent. The Silence is still there, so now one button to regain 15 energy, 15 runic power, or 6% of mana to the Blood Elf as well as an PBAoE(Point Blank Area of Effect) 2second Silence.
Magic Resistance now reduces the chance to be hit by spells by 2%.
Also anything that was not mentions stays the same.
